The aquatic treadmill is especially useful for very large, hydrophobic, aggressive, or brachiocephalic dogs. Many dogs start their rehabilitation programme in the pool but as their condition improves they can move on to the aquatic treadmill.

The aquatic treadmill provides controlled exercise in a supported and safe environment. By adjusting the speed of the treadmill, the water level and the time spent in the treadmill a bespoke rehabilitation programme can be devised for each individual dog. It allows low impact exercise when weight bearing exercise is either not possible or not advisable.

By altering the water level specific joints on the dog can be targeted. The aquatic treadmill works on both the extension and flexion of a joint, thus increasing the dogs range of movement. Its thermal properties provide pain relief and an increased perfusion of blood to tissues. Results include increased muscle function, strength, tone and mass.  Reduced oedema and improved cardiovascular function. It can also re-educate gait patterns after paralysis.

The aquatic treadmill can be used in the rehabilitation of many conditions/diseases. These fall into four main categories:

  • Developmental conditions such as hip dysplasia.
  • Degenerative conditions such as osteoarthritis.
  • Post surgical cases (Sometimes started in the pool )
  • Pre surgical cases such as total hip replacement.

The water is heated to between 27 – 30 degrees C. It is sanitised in the same way as the pool and the water quality is checked throughout the day.
